Kwame Poku – A great debut season
Congratulations to Kwame Poku on his debut season in the EFL (English Football League). At only 18 years of age, he made 38 appearances and scored 5 goals for Colchester United F.C, culminating in the League Two playoffs.
Huge credit goes to Kwame himself for his work rate and ability to take on information quickly as well as all the staff at the club who have shown tremendous faith in his ability.
Special praise must go to Volenti Academy and in particular Bobby Bowry, Charlie MacDonald and Nathan Bowen who coached Kwame daily in their Football and Education programme for two years. This grounding gave Kwame the platform to jump straight to first-team football last summer and immediately flourish.
It is very unusual for a player who has not been within a clubs Academy system to achieve this. Kwame’s story highlights there are many different routes to first-team football. Provided a player has ability, application, access to good coaching and can find a club that is willing to give young talent an opportunity there are no limits to what can be achieved.
